History and context
Ragusa Ibla, also known as Ragusa Inferiore, is the oldest part of the city and is located on a hill about 300-440 meters above sea level. The neighborhood's origins date back to the Sicilian era, with strong historical ties to ancient Hybla Heraia, and subsequently underwent Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Norman influences. After the devastating earthquake of 1693, the city was rebuilt in late Baroque style, becoming one of the most important Baroque centers in the Val di Noto, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Don't miss Modica, which in 2002 was included, together with the Val di Noto, in the UNESCO World Heritage list for its historic center, rich in Baroque architecture.
Of notable historical importance is the excellent state of conservation, right in the historic centre, from the Quartiriccio necropolis to the Vignazza district, with several dozen rock-cut oven tombs dating back to 2200 BC.
Famous for its chocolate, unique for its cold-processing process that dates back to the times of Spanish rule, handed down over time to the present day, making it an internationally renowned confectionery product.
