History and context
Perhaps the most famous city in Sicily for the famous Valley of the Temples, Agrigento boasts an archaeological park of over 1,300 hectares which houses Greek remains from the 5th-6th century BC.
Doric-style temples, dwellings, and sacred places declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
But Agrigento, located in central Sicily, also has a medieval historic center and elegant streets, including Via Atenea, overlooked by ancient buildings, the cathedral, churches, and museums.
About 13 km from Agrigento, the famous Scala dei Turchi (Turkish Steps) rises from the coast, a rocky cliff rising sheer into the sea along the coast of Realmonte, in the free municipal consortium of Agrigento. Over time, it has become a tourist attraction, both for the uniqueness of the cliff, white in color and with its distinctive shapes, and due to its popularity in the Inspector Montalbano novels written by Andrea Camilleri, a native of Empedocle. The fictional town of Vigata is often referred to as Porto Empedocle.
